Postal Service to Close Suspended McShan Post Office

November 16, 2011

Birmingham AL — The U.S. Postal Service has determined to close the suspended McShan Post Office, 2133 County Road 187, McShan AL 35471, effective January 28, 2012.

The Postal Service will provide delivery and retail services by a rural route administered by the Ethelsville Post Office, 491 Main Street, Ethelsville AL 35461 --- located 6.5 miles away. Service will be provided to roadside mailboxes installed by customers on the carrier’s line of travel.

There will be a change in the mailing address. The community name will continue to be used in the new address. However, a carrier route address will be assigned, and the ZIP Code will change to 35461.

The McShan Post Office suspended all operations on June 30, 2006. The Post Office provided service 24 hours a week from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon Monday through Saturday to 32 Post Office Box customers. Retail services included the sale of stamps, stamped paper, and money orders; special services such as Registered, Certified, Insured, COD and Express Mail were available. The facility also accepted and dispatched all classes of mail.

Since service was suspended, customers have received delivery and retail services from rural delivery from the Ethelsville Post Office. Window service hours at Ethelsville PO are from 8:00 am to 11:15 am and 12:45 pm – 4:15 pm, Monday through Friday, and 8:00 am to 10:45 am on Saturday. There are 26 Post Office Boxes available.

Some advantages to the final determination include:

  • Carrier delivery service is beneficial to some senior citizens, the handicapped, and working people since customers will no longer need to travel to the Post Office to pick up their mail.
  • The carrier provides retail services, alleviating the need to go to the Post Office. Stamps by Mail Order forms are provided for customer convenience.
  • Customers are encouraged to visit uspseverywhere.com for an interactive map that shows expanded retail access locations where they can conduct postal business.

The proposal to close the McShan Post Office was posted with an invitation for public comment at the Ethelsville Post Office from February 22, 2011 through April 19, 2011. The Postal Service received no comments.

On February 7, 2011, questionnaires were distributed to delivery customers of the McShan Post Office. Questionnaires also were available over the counter for retail customers at Ethelsville PO. No questionnaires were returned.

On June 8, 2008, postal representatives were available at the McShan Community Center to answer questions and provide information to customers. No customers attended the meeting.
