On September 7, 2016, legislation to designate the Eastlake Post Office to Jonathan ‘J.D.’ De Guzman was introduced by Congresswoman Susan Davis. It was approved on December 10, 2016 and signed into law by President Obama on December 16, 2016.

Public Law 114-306 designates the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 830 Kuhn Drive in Chula Vista California, as the “Jonathan ‘J.D.’ De Guzman Post Office Building”.

Jonathan De Guzman was an immigrant from the Philippines who joined the San Diego Police Department in 2000. He patrolled in local communities, served on the department’s elite gang suppression team, and as a member of the San Diego SWAT Team.

He received the department’s Purple Heart and Valor Medals for courage and service in the line of duty. De Guzman and his partner, Officer Wade Irwin, were shot in the line of duty while investigating suspicious activity. Both were critically injured during the altercation with Officer Irwin surviving. Officer De Guzman died of his injuries on July 28, 2016. He is survived by his wife of 23 years and two children. He was devoted to his job, the safety of the public and above all a loving husband and father.
