SAN FRANCISCO, CA — On Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at 10:00 am, Richard Norvelle will be honored for 50 years of faithful and dedicated federal service at the Noe Valley Post Office, 4083 24th St., San Francisco, CA 94114.

Norvelle first started his half-century of federal service in 1966 at the Rincon Annex Post Office in San Francisco, working in the printing office ; however, three months later he was in the U.S. Navy, where he served on a destroyer escort from 1966 to 1970. After his discharge, he returned to the Postal Service as a clerk in various San Francisco city post offices, and has worked at the Noe Valley Post Office since 1980.

As a clerk, he says he has seen it all when it comes to customers coming in to the Post Office to mail something. He remembers a guy who came in who seemed highly anxious. When Norvelle asked him if everything was ok, the man said, “I need to mail this shipment of toilet paper to my girlfriend in China. She doesn’t like the toilet paper there.” There was another instance he recalls when a carrier brought in a kitten that he had found in a mail collection box.

Norvelle shows no signs of slowing down and retirement is still not in his vocabulary.
