AURORA — The United States Postal Service honored an Aurora Letter Carrier today for demonstrating heroism and extraordinary service by presenting them with a the first-ever USPS Postal Hero Award, inspired by the ongoing heroism of the postal workforce.

Aurora Letter Carriers Danny Chavis was awarded a certificate at a ceremony on April 28, 2014 on National Superhero Day.

Details of community service/heroic action:
On March 13, Aurora Letter Carrier Danny Chavis exhibited great personal care and concern for one of his customers who livers on South Hannibal Street in Aurora. The elderly customer had not checked his mail in several days. Chavis conferred with a neighbor who had contact information for the man’s family. The family found the man had a stroke and was incapacitated inside the home. Had Chavis not been alert to the mail condition and inquired, medical attention would not have been rendered as soon as it was.

“The Postal Service is proud to recognize extraordinary leaders as the real superheroes of our community,” said Postmaster Joelle Zamora.

About Superhero Day
The Superhero campaign highlights the courageous acts of the postal workforce. Last year, the Postal Service recognized 262 postal employees for heroic acts in the Postmaster General’s heroes program. It coincides with the new limited edition Priority mail shipping boxes, featuring The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

National Superhero day started on April 28, 1995 by a group of employees at Marvel Comics. Every April 28th since has been celebrated as National Superhero Day.

To put some superhero Spidey-power into its promotion of Priority Mail shipping, the United States Postal Service (USPS) has teamed up with Sony Pictures for the release of the highly anticipated motion picture “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” and new custom Priority Mail shipping boxes feature the superhero in theaters nationwide on May 2, 2014.
