DULUTH, GA — This tax season, 26 metro Atlanta Post Offices with normal business hours past 5 p.m. will accommodate last-minute tax filers on Tuesday, April 18, the tax-filing deadline. (See attached list). Two locations, the Atlanta Main Office and the Boggs Road Post Office, will take drive-thru, stamped tax returns and provide the April 18 postmark until midnight.
- The Atlanta Main Post Office, 3900 Crown Road, which is open 6 a.m. to midnight, will be staffed to provide retail services and collect returns until midnight.
- The Postal Store at the 1605 Boggs Rd. Post Office, which is open for retail services until 7 p.m. and has a 24-hour Self-Service Kiosk, will also take drop-offs until midnight.
TIPS ON MAILING TAX FORMS
- Sign and date your return. Use a proper return address.
- Write clearly or use address labels. Hand-written tax return envelopes should be legible with a return address.
- Double-check postage. Weigh any return that feels heavier than one ounce. The IRS does not accept postage-due mail; tax returns bearing insufficient postage will be returned, meaning taxpayers will be penalized for filing late tax returns.
- Approximately 5 sheets of paper, 1 paper clip and the envelope can be mailed for 49 cents (1 ounce); each additional ounce is 22 cents per ounce.
- Use First-Class postage. The Internal Revenue Service accepts the inexpensive First-Class letter postmark as proof that a return has been mailed on time.
- If using a collection box or Self-Service Ship and Mail Center, be sure to deposit before the last posted collection time.
- Mail as early in the day as possible.
- Also, FAA rules require that stamped tax returns that weigh one pound or more must be mailed at a post office. They cannot be deposited in a mail- collection box.
- For taxpayers sending original receipts without copies, registered mail is recommended for ultimate peace of mind. It costs a little more, but it’s secure.
