CHICAGO IL — Chicago Children’s Museum (CCM) invites children and families to experience the season’s first snow day . . . indoors!  Families will gather on Saturday, November 25 for a special unveiling by the Postal Service of the Snowy Day stamps showcasing Ezra Jack Keats’ classic story, The Snowy Day.    The museum’s Great Hall will become a life-sized snow globe with thousands of flakes floating through the air while families dance together under the sparkling flurries.  The Chicago Children’s Museum is located at the Navy Pier, 700 E. Grand Avenue.

Chicago Postmaster, Tangela Bush will unveil the stamps with CCM President and CEO, Jennifer Farrington in the opening presentation at 1 p.m.  Following the unveiling, The Snowy Day stamps can be purchased and a special pictorial cancellation postmarked envelope will also be available for the day.

“I am honored to represent the Postal Service in unveiling four stamps that feature an iconic image that has had a positive impact on children for more than 50 years and brought diversity to mainstream children’s literature,” said Ms. Bush.

The snow flurries are set to fall at 2:15 p.m.  “Snow is a magical experience for children and adults to revel in the beloved seasonal pastime,” said Ms. Farrington.  “Keats’ story is a timeless classic that allows families to celebrate the wonder and joy of The Snowy Day together.”

Each of the four stamps in this 20-stamp booklet features a different illustration of main character Peter exploring and playing in his neighborhood while wearing his iconic red snowsuit. The images include: Peter forming a snowball, Peter sliding down a mountain of snow, Peter making a snow angel and Peter leaving footprints in the snow.

Since the publication of this treasured tale five decades ago, young readers have enjoyed joining Peter on his winter adventure. Unlike most popular children’s authors at the time, Keats made a point to feature ethnically and racially diverse characters in his work.  Published in 1962, The Snowy Day has sold millions of copies.  The book received the Caldecott Medal in 1963, awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American
