BOSTON, MA — For those last minute tax filers who want the comfort of handing their Federal Tax Return to a postal clerk; to see it hand cancelled and sent on its way, the Boston Fort Point Post Office, located at 25 Dorchester Avenue, will be open until midnight on Tuesday, April 15, 2014. Customers can also receive tax assistance at this location between 4 p.m. and 12 a.m. from the IRS and community volunteers.

Other Post Offices in the state will be open normal operating hours, many of which have Self-Services Kiosk (SSK) in their lobbies that are accessible 24 hours per day. You can do almost any postal transaction at a SSK except purchase money orders. The user-friendly kiosk is operated by a touch screen similar to an ATM at the bank.  IRS does not accept SSK receipts as proof of mailing so if you want a receipt of mailing you should present the release at a postal lobby.

To find out available hours, services and local retailers, you can visit www.usps.com  and select the Locate A Post Office search function.

The Postal Service offers the following advice to tax filers:

  • Use First-Class postage and pre-addressed labels when possible. Otherwise, write clearly and legibly. Remember to include a return address.
  • Affix sufficient postage. One ounce is 49 cents; every additional ounce up to 13 ounces costs an additional 21 cents per ounce.
  • Double-check postage. Weigh any return that feels heavier than one ounce. Tax agencies do not accept postage due mail; tax returns bearing insufficient postage will be returned – meaning taxpayers may be penalized for filing late tax returns.
  • Avoid the mad rush at the post office. Mail returns in local collection boxes, but remember to make certain that the posted pick-up time has not passed to ensure returns will have an April 15 postmark.
  • For customers who send original receipts to tax agencies, registered mail is a good choice.
  • Make certain bulky envelopes are securely sealed.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES: Based on foot traffic trends over the past years, we recommend the best times to catch customers filing their taxes are between 7 p.m. – 11 p.m.
