DETROIT, MI — With the holidays in full swing, the Postal Service is delivering more cards, letters, and packages every day. This means our customers will start to see postal employees delivering packages earlier in the morning, later in the evening, and on Sundays.

“We’ve been in the holiday shipping business for centuries,” says Detroit District Manager Lee Thompson. “Now is the time to get those holiday cards, letters, and packages in the mail.”

The U.S. Postal Service expects Monday, December 19 to be the busiest mailing day of the holiday season and Thursday, December 22, to be the busiest delivery day. The Postal Service is projecting about 16 billion total pieces of mail and packages will be delivered between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve.

Using correct addressing, packaging gifts well and mailing by recommended deadline dates can help ensure holiday wishes get to loved-ones by Dec. 25. Visit usps.com to get the full list of deadlines, pricing and shipping tips.

Mail-by Dates (Domestic Services)

  • Dec. 15 – USPS Retail Ground
  • Dec. 20 - First Class Mail
  • Dec. 21 - Priority Mail
  • Dec. 23 - Priority Mail Express

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
