DETROIT, MI — If you haven’t mailed your tax return, the Postal Service advises you to double check addressing and postage on mailed returns.

“The most common mistakes Americans make in mailing their forms are not including enough postage and not providing the correct IRS mailing address,” says Detroit District Manager Lee Thompson. “The cost to mail a one ounce First-Class letter is 49-cents – which usually covers about four, letter-sized sheets – mailers need to add 21-cents for each additional ounce.”

Because many customers file electronically, all retail locations in the metro Detroit area will maintain their normal business hours. There will be no extended hours or midnight locations.

The following Post Offices, though open until midnight in past years, will be open their regular business hours:

GWY MAIN POST OFFICE
1401 WEST FORT STREDFORD BRANCH
12245 BEECH DALY RD

REDFORD BRANCH
12245 BEECH DALY RD
REDFORD MI 48239
MONDAY TO FRIDAY 9:00AM TO 9:00PM

ROYAL OAK MAIN
200 W 2ND ST
ROYAL OAK MI 48068
MONDAY TO FRIDAY 8:00AM TO 7:00PM

SOUTHFIELD POST OFFICE
22200 W 11 MILE RD
SOUTHFIELD MI  48037
MONDAY TO FRIDAY 9:00AM TO 7:00PM

The IRS offers these suggestions if you mail a paper return:

  • Use the peel-off label. You can make necessary corrections right on the label. If you do not have a peel-off label, fill in all requested information clearly, including the Social Security numbers.
  • Never send cash.
  • If you file on paper, you can enclose your payment with your return but do not staple it to the form.
  • If you pay by check or money order, make sure it is payable to the “United States Treasury.”
  • Always provide on the front of your check or money order your correct name, address, Social Security number listed on the tax form, daytime telephone number, tax year and form number.
  • Complete and include Form 1040-V, Payment Voucher, when mailing your payment to the IRS. Double-check the IRS mailing address. This will help the IRS process your payment accurately and efficiently.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
