Background:

The Postal Service is honoring postal employees who have demonstrated extraordinary community service for residents of the city of Detroit.

While on her route, Monika Chester came to the aid of a customer who needed emergency medical attention. Her calm and immediate action demonstrates her selfless display of civic duty.

While on his route, James Ledbetter noticed a young child walking alone in a Detroit neighborhood. As the child was about to walk into the street, not seeing any other adults in the vicinity, Ledbetter stopped the child from potential harm. He called the police department and waited with the child until police arrived.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
