Buxton Post Office Now Offers Passport Service

BUXTON, NC — Residents on Hatteras Island can now enjoy the convenience of passport service, offered by the Buxton Post Office, located at 48042 NC Highway 12. This location serves as a convenient alternative to Kitty Hawk Post Office, which is more than 60 miles away. “We started processing passports last week and are excited about offering this service,” said Postmaster Donna Parker. “We gladly accept walk-in customers, appointments are not required.”

Passports will be processed during Buxton’s normal hours of operation, Mon – Fri, 9 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 3 p.m.; Sat 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. In order to expedite the process, customers are encouraged to complete applications before arriving. Customers should allow 15 minutes per transaction, depending upon the number of applicants in a transaction. 

Passport fees are as follows: Adults: Books - $110, Cards - $30; Children (under 16): Books - $80, Cards - $15. USPS Fees: $25 execution fee; photos (if needed) - $15.

Identification, including a copy, is required to prove U.S. citizenship, such as:

  • Previously issued, undamaged U.S. passport
  • Certified birth certificate issued by the city, county, or state
  • Consular report of birth abroad or birth certificate
  • Naturalization certificate
  • Certificate of citizenship

In addition, one current ID is required, such as:

  • Naturalization certificate
  • Valid driver's license
  • Current government ID (city, state or federal)
  • Current military ID (military and dependents)

Customers preferring to set up an appointment should call (919) 420-5343 and leave a message for an agent to return your call. All applicants must appear in person (including minors).

Customers can call 1-800-ASK-USPS or visit the Postal Service’s Website www.usps.com to get the location of other nearby passport Post Offices and their passport customer service hours. Passport customers may also check the U.S. State Department’s web site at www.travel.state.gov to obtain additional information.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
