WEST UNITY — An in-depth USPS safety and health investigation of the West Unity Post Office has revealed high levels of black mold in the building basement. In accordance with OSHA and USPS regulations, and to safeguard the health and safety of customers and employees, the Postal Service suspended operations at the West Unity Post Office on June 2, 2017.

Negotiations are underway with the property owner of the facility to abate the black mold issue. If the issue is abated, the Post Office will reopen at its current location. If the health issue is not abated, the Postal Service will initiate the process of locating an alternative site within the community to relocate the West Unity Post Office.  In the interim, retail operations provided by the West Unity Post Office have been relocated to the Bryan Post Office, 142 N Main St, Bryan, OH 43506. Special rotating Post Office Box units are being installed in the Bryan Post Office to provide West Unity Post Office Box customers with 24-hour access to their mail. Customers presently receiving rural delivery will not experience a change in service, with the exception of retrieving parcels and accountable mail at the Bryan Post Office that the carrier was unable to deliver. West Unity Post Office delivery customers will continue to use West Unity, OH 43570 as their line of delivery.

Window service hours at the Bryan Post Office are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday and 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.

No final decision has been made to permanently discontinue or close the West Unity Post Office. In the event the identified safety and health issue is not resolved, a community meeting will be held to explain USPS plans and solicit community comments.
