Stamp Announcement 12-29: Great Film Directors

Stamp Announcement 12-29: Great Film Directors

On May 23, 2012, in Silver Spring, Maryland, the Postal Service™ will issue the Great Film Directors commemorative stamp (Forever® priced at 45 cents) in four designs in a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) pane of 20 stamps (Item 469200). The stamps will go on sale nationwide May 23, 2012.

With these stamps, the U.S. Postal Service® honors four extraordinary film directors — Frank Capra, John Ford, John Huston, and Billy Wilder. Creators of some of the most iconic scenes in American cinema, they gave audiences an unforgettable (and in some cases, deeply personal) vision of life. The stamps showcase portraits of each filmmaker against a background suggesting scenes from their work: Frank Capra, It Happened One Night; John Ford, The Searchers; John Huston, The Maltese Falcon; and Billy Wilder, Some Like It Hot. Working with art director Derry Noyes, illustrator Gary Kelley created the stamp art using pastels on paper.
