Temporary Suspension of Mail Service to Syria

Effective March 13, 2013, the Postal Service™ temporarily suspended mail service to Syria due to transportation issues. Until further notice, all Post Office™ locations and other acceptance locations must not accept any mail destined to the country of Syria. The temporary suspension affects Express Mail International®, Priority Mail International®, First-Class Mail International®, First-Class Package International Service™, International Priority Airmail™ (IPA®), International Surface Air Lift® (ISAL®), and M-bag items.

For already deposited items addressed to Syria, Postal Service employees must endorse them “Mail Service Temporarily Suspended — Return to Sender” and then place them in the mailstream for return.

For all returned Express Mail International items or any other item bearing a customs declaration form, the Postal Service will, upon request, refund postage and fees on mail returned due to the suspension of service.

For all returned items not bearing a customs declarations form, the Postal Service will, upon request, refund postage and fees on mail returned due to the suspension of service, or once the Postal Service restores mail service to Syria, the sender may remail the items with the existing postage. When remailing under this option, customers must cross out the endorsement “Mail Service Temporarily Suspended — Return to Sender.”
