Cybersecurity in the Postal Service Workplace

With cyber attacks on the rise, USPS® employees must learn how to protect the Postal Service™ from potential threats. This National Cyber Security Awareness Month, use the following tips to protect USPS networks, systems, and resources:

Workstation Safety

n Lock your workstation or devices when not in use.

n Do not plug unauthorized devices (e.g., mobile phones, tablets) into USPS equipment.

n Store sensitive documents in a secure area.

n Use USPS equipment for official business only.

Data Protection

n Don’t share confidential information with unauthorized co-workers.

n Do not allow others to use your USPS equipment.

n Use approved encryption methods to protect sensitive information.

n Keep anti-virus software updated.

Online Activity

n Use the Virtual Private Network (VPN) to securely connect to USPS networks when working offsite.

n Do not provide personal or sensitive information to an unknown person or organization.

n Do not sign up for news feeds or continuous data streams unless the material is required for USPS business.

Password Guidance

n Create strong passwords that use a minimum of 15 characters, including letters, numbers, or special characters.

n Do not share user names and passwords.

Email Use

n Check the sender before responding to unfamiliar emails.

n Hover over links (do not click) to verify the web address before taking action.

n Do not open suspicious-looking attachments.

n Be wary of strange grammar and spelling in email messages.

If you suspect your USPS equipment has been compromised, please do not attempt to fix the situation yourself. Instead, report it immediately to the CyberSecurity Operations Center (CSOC) using the new “Report to CyberSafe” button on the Outlook toolbar.
