2-4 Insured Mail — PS Form 3813-P

2-4.1 General Information

Retail insured mail service provides up to $5,000 indemnity coverage for a lost, rifled, or damaged article, subject to the standards for the service and payment of the applicable fee. A bulk insurance discount is available for insured articles entered by authorized mail owners who meet the criteria (as defined in DMM 503.4.4.1) and have received the proper Postal Service authorization. Insured mail service provides the sender with a mailing receipt.

For articles insured for more than $200, the Postal Service maintains a delivery record (recipient’s signature). Insured mailpieces are dispatched and handled in transit as ordinary mail. In addition, the mail must bear the complete names and addresses of both the sender and the addressee.
