Festive flicks featuring holiday mail

The holidays are a time of sending seasonal greetings, mailing packages — and watching movies. So, get cozy with some popcorn and count down the days of December with these flicks featuring mail-related themes and titles:

  1. “Yes, Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus” (1991). Inspired by the famous editorial written in response to a letter mailed by a young girl, Virginia O’Hanlan, in 1897, the movie stars Charles Bronson as the New York City newspaper editor who helps to answer her query about the man up North. Fast-forward to the animated version released in 2009.
  2. “The Christmas Card” (2006). A U.S. soldier (John Newton) visits the town where an inspirational Christmas card was sent to him by a church group that sends mail to service members as a goodwill effort. This Hallmark Channel production offers a picturesque holiday backdrop and a cast that includes Ed Asner and Alice Evans.
  3. “A Muppets Christmas: Letters to Santa” (2008). This NBC special follows Jim Henson’s beloved characters on a Christmas mission to personally deliver three letters to Santa Claus accidentally diverted by Gonzo. Guest stars include Nathan Lane, Jane Krakowski and Jesse L. Martin, who plays a postal worker.
  4. “Christmas Mail” (2010). This Hallmark Channel production full of red, green and postal blue is about a mysterious writer (Ashley Scott) who is hired by a Post Office to answer letters to Santa and soon finds herself bringing cheer and romance to a mail carrier (A.J. Buckley).
  5. “Dear Santa” (2011). In this Lifetime movie directed by Jason Priestley, an affluent woman (Amy Acker) falls for a widower and soup-kitchen owner (David Haydn-Jones) after discovering a Dear Santa letter written by his 7-year-old daughter.
  6. “Dear Secret Santa” (2013). Busy city banker Jennifer (Tatyana Ali) comes home for the holidays to the small town where she grew up. After making a wish for love, the magic of Christmas arrives in her mailbox in an unexpected way — a letter exchange with a secret admirer from her past.
  7. “Signed, Sealed and Delivered for Christmas” (2014). In this Hallmark Channel movie, a quartet of postal detectives discover an urgent letter addressed to God on Christmas Eve. They each delay their own holiday plans to help a little girl whose mother is ailing.
  8. “The Christmas Gift” (2015). In this Lifetime production, a journalist (Michelle Trachtenberg) whose life was deeply affected by a Secret Santa gift delivered when she was 10 years old sets out to find out who sent it to her.
  9. “Season’s Greetings” (2016). A writer (Laura Bell Bundy) loves her job of penning Christmas greeting cards, but her new boss (Casey Manderson) has different plans for the company in this Up TV production.
  10. “48 Christmas Wishes” (2017). This Netflix movie takes place on the night before the night before Christmas, when two junior elves lose an entire town’s letters to Santa. It’s up to them to retrieve every missing wish before Christmas Eve.
  11. “Christmas in Evergreen: Letters to Santa” (2018). In this second installment of a Hallmark Channel movie series, a woman (Jill Wagner) returns to her hometown and soon finds herself a part of an effort to save the general store and answer an old letter found in a Letters-to-Santa mailbox.
  12. “Write Before Christmas” (2019). In this Hallmark Channel production, after a recently single woman (Torrey DeVitto) sends Christmas cards to five people who have influenced her life, the single woman develops a romance with the son (Chad Michael Murray) of one recipient.
  13. “A Very Vintage Christmas” (2019). An antique shop owner and hopeless romantic (Tia Mowry-Hardrict) finds a hidden box containing mementos, letters, and postcards in this Lifetime movie.
  14. “Holiday for Heroes” (2019). In this Hallmark Movies and Mysteries production, a woman (Melissa Claire Egan) and a soldier (Marc Blucas) exchange letters for a year before they meet during the holiday season.
  15. “Christmas Love Letter” (2019). In this Lifetime movie, a relationship advice columnist (Ashley Newbrough) receives an unsigned love letter in a Christmas card and returns to her hometown to solve the mystery of who sent it.
  16. “Klaus” (2019). In this Oscar-nominated film, a postman and a toymaker form a friendship to answer letters and deliver joy to a Norwegian town that is desperately in need of it.
  17. “Dear Santa” (2020). This independent documentary showcases the annual USPS Operation Santa program that matches letters to Santa with generous givers who fulfill holiday wish lists. Viewers also see how the Postal Service stays on top of all the holiday letters addressed to the North Pole.
  18. “Deliver by Christmas” (2020). This Hallmark Movies and Mysteries production with a postal-worthy title tells the story of a bakery owner (Alvina August) who meets a widower (Eion Bailey) who has moved to her town with his young son.
  19. “Hanukkah on Rye” (2022). A matchmaker connects two deli owners, Jacob and Molly, who are instructed to communicate only through letters during Hannukah. The movie premieres Dec. 17 on the Hallmark Channel and stars Yael Grobglas, Jeremy Jordan and Lisa Loeb.
  20. “Holiday Heritage” (2022). The Hallmark Channel will debut its first-ever Kwanzaa movie on Dec. 16. The story centers around a family celebrating the weeklong holiday honoring African heritage and African American culture. It stars Holly Robinson Peete, Brooks Darnell and Lyndie Greenwood.
