Background: The Postal Service has been delivering holiday cheer for the last 241 years.  We are the ‘shipper of choice’ during the Holiday Season, whether it’s cards, letters or packages. The Madison Post Office is a full service retail facility ready to handle all customer needs during the holidays. This is our season.

    • The Madison Post Office/Processing Facility usually processes 2.9 million cards and letters on an average day. During the peak holiday season (Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve) the Madison Post Office/Processing facility will handle on average 4.0 million, which will eventually peak on the Busiest Mailing Day on Monday, December 19 at 4.9 million cards and letters.

    • The Madison Post Office/Processing Facility will normally process 28,000 packages a day. During the peak holiday season this will increase to 37,000 daily with some days reaching 50,000 packages.

    • Across the country, the Postal Service is projecting approximately a 12 percent increase in package volume this holiday season over last year.  This month Madison is 30% above last year and we haven’t even gotten into the busiest time yet.

    • The Postal Service is a leader when it comes to scanning packages. This provides customers the opportunity to track their packages as they go through the mail processing system from the beginning to the end of the journey.

  • The Postal Service recommends mailing earlier in the day and using postal blue collection boxes in order to guarantee cards and letters enter the Milwaukee P&DC sooner for processing.

Conclusion: The holiday is the peak mailing season for the Postal Service.  Through the use of automation and skilled employees, the Postal Service is able to process more mail faster than ever before. Helping to make this possible is mail that is dropped earlier in the day to ensure timely delivery and processing in Madison and throughout the country.
