USPS Holiday Preparations Underway

New package sorting machine installed in Fort Wayne; 1 of 137 nationwide

FORT WAYNE, IN —The U.S. Postal Service is accelerating the delivery of 137 new package sorting machines across the country to meet customers’ evolving mailing and shipping needs ahead of the 2022 holiday season – one of these new machines is now up and running in Fort Wayne. This new technology is part of Delivering for America, our 10-year plan to achieve financial sustainability and service excellence, which includes $40 billion in new investments.

The media is invited to view the newly installed Single Induction Package Sorter (SIPS) machine in action on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2022, at 6:00 p.m. at the Fort Wayne Processing and Distribution Center (P&DC), 1501 S. Clinton St., Fort Wayne, IN 46802.

Fort Wayne Plant Manager Martin Hunnicutt will host the tour and be available for interviews. The SIPS can process 2,100 packages — ranging from .1 oz. to 20 lbs. — every hour. The new processing machines, which have a smaller footprint, will also free up much needed space to sort letter and flat mail. Since January of last year, USPS has added a total of 270 new package sorting machines to the Postal network, increasing its package processing capacity to 60 million packages per day this holiday season.

During the 2021 holiday season, the Postal Service accepted more than 13.2 billion letters, cards, flats, and packages for delivery, exceeding 12.7 billion accepted for delivery during the same timeframe in 2020. Last holiday season, the Fort Wayne P&DC processed 1.49 million packages between Nov. 21st to Dec. 31st.

The Postal Service generally receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products, and services to fund its operations.
