Salt Lake Priority Mail Center to Pull Back the Curtain for Local Media on How It Handles Holiday Rush

The Salt Lake City Priority Mail Center will pull back the curtain ahead of the busiest week this season on how technology and employees combine to sort packages during the holidays.

Postal employees will share some essential information on the holiday mailing season, including shipping deadlines, extended retail hours, packaging tips, and how to ship conveniently.

Background:

The Postal Service plans months ahead for the holiday season. It is a busy and rewarding time for Utah postal employees as they work around the clock for their customers to ensure all holiday cards and packages are processed and delivered on-time.

Beginning the week of Dec. 5, customer traffic increased, with the week of Dec. 12-17 predicted to be the busiest mailing, shipping and delivery week. Nearly 250 million customers will visit Post Office locations this season, roughly 4.7 million per day.

It’s estimated roughly 149 million people will visit usps.com this season to order free Priority Mail boxes, print shipping labels, purchase postage and even request free next-day Package Pickup.

2022 Holiday Shipping Deadlines

  • Dec. 9 – Overseas Military Mail
  • Dec. 17 – First-Class Mail (greetings cards and letters)
  • Dec. 19 – Priority Mail
  • Dec. 23 – Priority Mail Express

The Postal Service generally receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
