With more than 34,000 facilities, each with its own energy requirements, the Postal Service has an excellent opportunity to make a difference in energy consumption. The Postal Service’s goal is to reduce energy consumption in facilities by 20 percent during the next five years. The new Utility Management System will help.

The Utility Management System monitors energy use and costs, processes bill payments, provides detailed cost and consumption profiles and performs rate optimization and auditing. By making utility use more visible, the program will help the Postal Service target conservation efforts, prioritize investment in facility infrastructure and obtain more favorable utility pricing.

The Postal Service began evaluating the new management system recently at 500 large and 100 small facilities. North Carolina–based Energy United Services and the North Dakota–based National Information Solutions Cooperative are in charge of the program for the Postal Service. If it’s successful in reducing energy consumption, USPS will extend it to all postal facilities.
