Acting Vice President, Great Lakes Area
Salvatore “Sal” Vacca was named acting vice president, Area Operations for the Great Lakes Area in April 2020.
In this position, he is responsible for overseeing operations including mail processing, delivery, customer service and administrative functions throughout seven districts: Central Illinois, Chicago, Detroit, Gateway, Greater Indiana, Greater Michigan, and Lakeland. This includes leading a workforce of more than 78,000 employees, with responsibility for all aspects of operations and customer service. The Great Lakes Area serves more than 36 million customers across five states, has 16.9 million delivery points in a 201,824 square mile geographic area, and has an operating budget of more than $7 billion.
Vacca is a 35-year postal veteran. He started his postal career in 1985 as a letter carrier in Newark, New Jersey. Most recently, he served as acting district manager for the South Florida district. He previously served as postmaster in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and West Palm Beach, Florida, and was detailed as officer-in-charge in Miami, Florida. He has held other top-level positions, including officer-in-charge in Atlanta, Georgia; district manager of the Atlanta district; manager, Operations Support for the Capital Metro area; and district manager for the Capital District.
Vacca completed training at Duke University’s School of Business in North Carolina. He is a graduate of the Advanced Leadership Program and completed Executive Foundations and Executive Leadership training. He is also Green Belt certified.
