Media Open House at the Michigan Metroplex Mail Processing Plant Tuesday, December 11, 2018

What:

Media crews are invited to join us for a behind-the scenes look at mail processing during our most demanding time of the year. With the busiest mailing and shipping days of the year upon us, this is a great opportunity to capture some mail processing B-roll, photos and an interview with the plant manager for holiday news stories.

This will be the only time media will be granted access into the Southeast Michigan Metroplex mail processing plant this holiday season.

Please RSVP to elizabeth.najduch@usps.gov by December 10, 2018.

When:

From 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.
Tuesday, December 11, 2018

Where:

Michigan Metroplex
711 N. Glenwood
Pontiac, MI 48340

Background:

The Postal Service is flexing its network to meet peak volumes during the most hectic mailing period of the year. What used to be termed the “busiest mailing day” of the year is now the “busiest week” for shipping and delivery. Busiest mailing, shipping and delivery week for greeting cards and packages is Dec. 17 – 23 when we expect to handle more than 2 billion cards, letters and packages.

This holiday season the Postal Service is projecting nearly 16 billion cards, letters and packages will be processed and delivered across the nation from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Eve this season. More than 900 million packages are projected for delivery this holiday season.

The Michigan Metroplex cancels all First-Class cards, letters, and flat mail collected from the entire Southeast Michigan area. The facility processes for delivery, cards, letters, flat mail pieces and packages.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses, and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
