4. SHARED SERVICES/ACCOUNTING
The Shared Services/Accounting (SS/A) initiative is a reengineering of accounting processes of the Postal Service. Using the SAFR system as the cornerstone, field accounting processes have been redesigned and streamlined for efficiency. Work associated with the re-engineered processes will be performed in our three accounting service centers, rather than in 85 districts. Documents will be imaged, eliminating paper, and accounting services provided will be measured. A national accounting help desk will respond to all accounting related questions. Pilot test sites will be brought into SS/A in November 2002, resulting in the closure of the first four district accounting offices. Affected employees will be outplaced according to the APWU National Agreement. Implementation by area is scheduled for completion in September 2003.
