IMM Revision: Modifying References to the Republic of the Congo

Effective January 18, 2009, the Postal Service™ is revising Mailing Standards of the United States Postal Service, International Mail Manual (IMM®) to modify all references to the Republic of the Congo by omitting the parenthetical reference to the capital city, Brazzaville.

Currently, the reference to the country is “Republic of the Congo (Brazzaville),” which in alphabetical lists often appears as “Congo, Republic of the (Brazzaville).” This nomenclature was implemented prior to 1998 to assist in distinguishing between the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

We will incorporate these revisions into the next printed version of the IMM and into the monthly update of the online IMM, which is available via Postal Explorer® at http://pe.usps.com.
