U.S. Postal Service Expects Busy Holiday Mailing

ANCHORAGE — The U.S. Postal Service is prepared to process and deliver heavy mail volumes this holiday season throughout the entire country, including Alaska.

“The Postal Service will deliver an estimated 15 billion pieces of mail, including 850 million parcels, between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year,” according to Alaska District -  Manager, Marketing Dawn Peppinger.

Peppinger reminds customers that the Main Post Office in Anchorage, 4141 Postmark Dr., is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

In addition, the Postal Service will be delivering parcels on each Sunday leading up to Christmas, including Christmas eve, in Anchorage, Fairbanks and other select cities, according to Peppinger.

Also, Letter Carriers in Anchorage and other select cities will begin delivering parcels at 6 a.m. throughout the week.

If you are mailing a parcel, be sure to….

  • Use a box that is rigid and in good condition.
  • Avoid empty space in the box.
  • Use proper sealing tape.
  • Print clearly and completely on the outside of the parcel both the delivery address and the return address.

Following are mailing deadlines for customers in Alaska:

  • Retail Ground – within the State of Alaska only, Dec. 15.
  • Priority Mail --  Dec. 20.
  • First-Class Mail – Dec. 19
  • Priority Mail Express – Dec. 21. For an additional fee, Sunday and holiday, Dec. 22.
