Birmingham AL --- The U.S. Postal Service is moving forward with a plan to keep open Post Offices by realigning retail window hours based on customer use. Customer surveys were tabulated and results announced by postal officials at recent community meetings.
The Bon Air Post Office at 200 Front Street will have two hours of retail window service each day; however, operational hours and the implementation date have not yet been announced. Saturday retail window service will continue to be available 7:00 am to 10:00 am.
Effective January 12, 2013, two Alabama Post Offices will have changes to retail window service hours:
Whatley Post Office, 1009 Main Street, Whatley AL 36482
Monday - Friday, 12:00 Noon to 2:00 pm; Saturday hours will not be reduced.
Customers will have access to their mail receptacles 24 hours a day, and Post Office Box mail will be available by 1:00 pm for pick up Monday through Friday.
Wing Post Office, 2989 AL Highway 137, Wing AL 36483
Monday – Friday, 8:00 am to 12:00 Noon, and Saturday, 8:00 am to 11:30 am (no change)
Customers will have access to their mail receptacles 24 hours a day, and Post Office Box mail will be available by 10:00 am Monday through Friday, and Saturday.
Three Post Offices will have new retail window service hours effective January 26, 2013:
Coker Post Office, 14585 Romulus Rd, Coker AL 35452
Monday- Friday, 8:00 am to 12:00 Noon; and Saturday, 7:00 am to 10:00 am (no change)
Customers will have access to their mail receptacles 24 hours a day, and Post Office Box mail will be available by 9:30 am Monday through Friday, and Saturday.
Gallant Post Office, 9125 Gallant Road, Gallant AL 35972
Monday – Friday, 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, and Saturday, 8:00 am to 10:00 am
Customers will continue to have access to delivery receptacles 24 hours a day, and Post Office Box mail will be available for pick up by 11:00 am Monday through Friday, and Saturday.
Marbury Post Office, 3050 AL Highway 143, Marbury AL 36051
Monday – Friday, 8:00 am to 12:00 Noon, and Saturday, 7:30 am to 10:00 am (no change)
Customers will continue to have access to their delivery receptacles 24 hours a day; Post Office Box mail will be available for pick up by 10:00 am Monday through Friday, as well as Saturday.
Alabama customers chose their preference from four options:
1. Keep the Post Office open, based on actual office workload. For example, hours would be reduced from 8 hours each weekday to 4 hours per weekday. Current Saturday hours will not change as a result of POStPlan and access to your delivery receptacles will not be impacted by POStPlan.
2. Conduct a discontinuance study for the office and offer roadside mailbox delivery. Retail and
delivery service would be provided through a rural carrier. Mail delivery points will be established
and customers can purchase most postal services through the carrier or other alternate access points.
3. Conduct a discontinuance study for the office and find a suitable alternative location operated by a contractor, usually at a local business. When businesses are found that meet the criteria, these
establishments are contracted through the U.S. Postal Service and offer stamps and flat rate products
with service hours generally more expansive than what the local Post Office will be able to offer.
4. Conduct a discontinuance study for the office and provide P.O. Box service via another nearby
Post Office and relocate P.O. Box delivery to that Post Office.
