Birmingham, AL — The Meadowbrook Post Office building at 1900 Corporate Drive in Birmingham, Alabama, will be dedicated to Lance Corporal Thomas E. Rivers, Jr., in a 2 p.m. ceremony, which is free and open to the public, on Tuesday, September 18.
Lance Corporal Rivers was assigned to 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C. On April 28, 2010, at the age of 22, he lost his life while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer (R-AL), whose district includes Birmingham, AL, sponsored a bill in Congress to dedicate the Meadowbrook Post Office after Rivers, and the President signed the bill into law on July 24, 2018.
Lance Corporal Rivers, of Hoover, Alabama, was a 2007 graduate of Briarwood Christian School, and had wanted to become a Marine all of his life. In June 2007, he joined the Marines and was serving his second tour of duty in the Middle East and had previously served a tour of duty in Iraq. His awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Afghanistan Campaign Medal and Iraq Campaign Medal.
