Postal Service changes date to December 1 for public meeting on mail processing study in Harrison

November 09, 2010

LITTLE ROCK – The U.S. Postal Service will hold a public meeting to discuss its proposal to move some mail processing operations from the Harrison Post Office into the Northwest Arkansas Mail Processing Center in Fayetteville.

However, due to a scheduling conflict the Postal Service has re-scheduled the public meeting to Wednesday, December 1, at the North Arkansas College Center, 1515 Pioneer Drive, Harrison AR, 72601.  The meeting will begin at 7:00 pm in the JPH Conference Center. (The previously scheduled date was November 16.)

A summary of the proposal and presentation materials is available to the public on usps.com prior to the meeting.

With the deep decline in mail volume due to current economic conditions, the Postal Service has an excess of employees and equipment in some mail processing operations.  A study was begun on September 21 at Harrison Post Office to determine the feasibility of consolidating redundant operations to see if any efficiencies and cost savings would be achieved.

Initial study results support consolidating some mail processing operations that are currently being performed at the Harrison Post Office by taking advantage of available processing capacity at the Northwest Arkansas Processing Center in order to increase efficiency and improve productivity.

While no final decision has been reached, Postal Service managers will give an overview of the reasons for the proposal and its possible outcomes, and will listen to community input and concerns. A summary of the proposal, the meeting agenda and presentation materials are now available on usps.com.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no direct support from taxpayers. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 28th in the 2009 Fortune 500.
