Postal Service announces April 15 services, urges tax filers to mail early this year

April 02, 2010

To assist last-minute tax filers, Phoenix-area Post Offices will offer two satellite drive-through drop-off locations from 5 p.m. until midnight on Thursday, April 15. One will be at the Phoenix Municipal Stadium parking lot at 56th Street and East Van Buren in Phoenix. The other will be at Peoria Sports Complex off Bell Road, east of Loop 101, at 16101 N. 83rd Ave. in Peoria.

The Postal Service urges customers to avoid the last-minute crowds and mail their tax returns well before April 15th, or at least early that day. For those who decide to wait until deadline day, the satellite locations will be the most convenient.

Phoenix Muni will be accessible from E. Van Buren Street or E. Washington Street at 56th Street. Customers driving westbound on Loop 202 should exit at the Van Buren/52nd Street off ramp, then turn east on Van Buren. Drivers headed eastbound on Loop 202 or north on Hwy. 143 should use the Washington Street exit ramp and continue east on Washington to 56th Street.

The Peoria Sports Complex location will be accessible from 83rd Avenue, using the Mariners Way entrance. Customers are urged to follow the directional signs posted near the drop-off locations.

Stamps will be available at both drop-off locations for customers’ convenience. The Peoria Sports Complex location will accept cash only for stamp purchases, so customers are urged to come prepared.

Full retail services, including Certified Mail and Registered Mail, will be available until midnight on April 15th at the Phoenix Main Post Office, 4949 E. Van Buren St. However, customers in Phoenix desiring convenient drive-through drop off service will be directed toward the Phoenix Municipal Stadium location.

Drive-through customers at both Peoria and Phoenix Municipal must have the correct amount of postage affixed to their returns. (First-Class postage is 44 cents for the first ounce and 17 cents for each additional ounce.) In addition to being available at Post Offices, postage stamps can be purchased at dozens of locations around the Valley, including supermarkets and contract postal units. Locations may be looked up online at usps.com/tax.

Customers mailing earlier in the day using one of the Postal Service’s blue collection boxes are urged to double-check the collection times posted on each blue box to ensure their envelopes are picked up before the midnight deadline. Another reminder: IRS forms are not available at postal locations.
