TEMPE, AZ — The United States Postal Service will celebrate the grand opening for Arizona’s first Village Post Office (VPO) on Tuesday, Aug. 6, at the Thirsty Dog 2 Go store, 15 W. 5th St. in Downtown Tempe.

Village Post Offices are located in non-Postal Service establishments, such as an existing community business, town hall or government center.

City of Tempe officials will join Tempe Postmaster JoLea Quintana and Thirsty Dog 2 Go owner Gil Schmitt for a noon “ribbon cutting” Tuesday, utilizing a string of hot dogs as the ribbon. Each Thirsty Dog 2 Go customer will be offered a free hot dog with a postage or merchandise purchase between noon and 4 p.m. in celebration of the grand opening.

Thirsty Dog 2 Go has the distinction of hosting the first VPO to open in the State of Arizona, according to Quintana.

Nationwide, 330 VPOs provide a range of limited postal services that includes the sale of First-Class (Forever) stamp booklets, free Priority Mail flat-rate supplies, prepaid Priority Mail Flat Rate products and pre-paid mail acceptance.

The VPO at Thirsty Dog 2 Go will be open during the store’s regular business hours, from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 2 a.m Friday and Saturday; and from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Sunday.

The U.S. Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
