POMONA, CA – The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) is proud to dedicate and unveil its newest commemorative stamp, the Lunar New Year – Year of the Ox stamp, at the Asian American Expo on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, at 2:30 p.m. The Asian American Expo takes place this weekend from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Pomona Fairplex, located at 1101 W. McKinley Ave.
The Year of the Ox stamp is the second stamp issued in the latest Lunar New Year stamp series designed by artist Kam Mak, who was born in Hong Kong and grew up in New York City's Chinatown after his family moved to the U.S. in 1971. Art director Ethel Kessler of Bethesda, MD, worked on the new series with Mak, who now lives in Brooklyn, NY. They focused on some of the common ways the Lunar New Year Holiday is celebrated. To commemorate the Year of the Ox (Jan. 26, 2009 - Feb. 13, 2010), they chose a lion head of a type often worn at parades and other festivities.
The 42-cent Year of the Ox stamp was issued in New York City on Jan. 8, 2009, and is available at all Post Offices, online at usps.com and will also be on sale at the Asian American Expo in Building Four. The USPS will also have a special pictorial postmark available at the Expo to commemorate the event.
The Postal Service’s previous Lunar New Year stamps series was introduced in 1992 and was designed and illustrated by Clarence Lee of Honolulu, HI.
