SAN JOSE, CA — In a celebration of the life and contributions of Chinese-American leader Gordon Chan, the U.S. Postal Service will hold a ceremony on Feb. 18, at 10:30 a.m., to rename the Main Post Office, 1750 Lundy Avenue, San Jose, as the Gordon N. Chan Post Office. The ceremony, capped with music, dancers and the newest issue of the Lunar New Year Stamp (Year of the Ox), will feature remarks by USPS Bay-Valley District Manager Kim Fernandez, San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed and U.S. Rep. Michael Honda, who introduced the bill to rename the Post Office for Chan. This will mark the first renaming of a Post Office for an individual in San Jose.

“The dedication of a Post Office buildingin the memory of a local citizen is a fitting tribute because a Post Office, like the mail that runs through it, binds this nation together,” said Fernandez. “And like Gordon Chan’s character, this Post Office has a simple and functional purpose…one that sends a message of strength and unity throughout our community and across our nation that a Post Office is the cornerstone of every town and city across America.”

As a pioneer of Chinese-American political leadership and participation in Santa Clara County, Gordon Chan broke critical new ground for the Asian-American community. The first Chinese American to be appointed to the Santa Clara County Planning Commission in the 1980s, Chan was also the first and only Chinese-American president of the Santa Clara Farm Bureau, a bureau which represents all farmers in the County. In dedication to Santa Clara County, Chan also served on the County’s Redistricting Commission, Trail Commission, Open Space Authority, Cut Flower Commission, and the Fair Board.

Gordon Chan’s wife, Anita, and his daughters, Angela, Juliet and Janet, now carry his legacy through continued community service, philanthropy and activism.
