Release No. 10-028

SONORA, CA — Joann Brewer will follow a proud tradition dating back to 1776 when Benjamin Franklin became the first Postmaster General sworn in by the Continental Congress. On Thursday, 09:30 a.m., January 14, Brewer will raise her right hand to take the official oath of office at the Sonora Post Office, 781 S. Washington Street, Sonora CA 95370.

Brewer, 45, started her postal career in 1988 as a clerk/carrier at the Planada CA Post Office, later transferring to the Atwater Post Office in 1990. In 1996, she was promoted to Supervisor, Customer Services at the Merced Post Office, and in 1999 became the station manager at Merced’s Bell Station. She started her Postmaster path in 2004 when she was promoted as the Chowchilla CA Postmaster. In 2007, she transferred to El Dorado KS as Postmaster. She returned to the Sonora Post Office in 2009, eventually being selected as the Postmaster.

“It is an honor to serve the people of Sonora,” said Brewer. “While the Postal Service has a mandate to provide universal service, the community of Sonora is my universe and excellent customer service begins here.”

Brewer enjoys spending time with her family, daughters Valerie, 24, a postal employee at the Fresno Processing and Distribution Center, and Tiffany, 19. She has a two-year old grandson, Cooper. Brewer resides in Merced.

As Sonora Postmaster, Brewer oversees 45 employees who process and deliver a daily mail volume of 64,000 pieces to 12,965 delivery points (addresses) and 2, 674 Post Office boxes.
