LOS ALTOS Calif. — The Los Altos Main Post Office, located at 221 Main St., will celebrate its grand opening on Friday, March 26, 2010 at 9 a.m. The public and media are invited to the ceremony, which will take place at the Main Street entrance to the Post Office.
“The Post Office moved from its old 1st Street location at the end of January, and since then we’ve had a chance to settle in,” Mak Mahal, postmaster of Los Altos said. “Now it’s time to officially open our doors and celebrate the new Post Office location.”
Mahal will be joined for the ribbon cutting by San Francisco Postal District Manager Rosemarie Fernandez and Los Altos Mayor David Casas. Following the short ceremony, light refreshments will be served and Postal Service representatives will be on hand to offer time- and money-saving tips for small business owners.
The move to the new location followed on the heels of the relocation of the downtown Los Altos letter carrier unit, which took place in mid-January. The letter carrier unit that was located in the old Post Office location moved to the Loyola Corners Station, located at 1525 Miramonte Ave., Los Altos in order to streamline mail delivery.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no direct support from taxpayers. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 28th in the 2009 Fortune 500.
