Release No. 10-048

PEBBLE BEACH CA — The best drive of the day is the one to the Pebble Beach Post Office during the 2010 U.S. Open. Visitors to this year’s U.S. Open at Pebble Beach can add two souvenir envelopes to their golf bag—the 100th anniversary and the other the legacy of Jack Nicklaus. Introduced to commemorate the prestigious 100th anniversary of the 2000 U.S. Open, the Post Office has a limited quantity for those who truly treasure golf memorabilia.

Collectors can reminisce about golf’s golden year played in the Golden State by the “The Golden Bear,” Jack Nicklaus, who made one of the most famous shots in golf history on a windy 17th hole.

The 100th anniversary envelope is illustrated with three Pebble Beach icons: the 7th hole, The Lodge and the universally recognized Lone Cypress Tree. Centered in the design is an image of a golfer in full swing, embossed in gold.

The Golden Bear envelope is a tribute to Jack Nicklaus, all-time leader in major championship wins. It is a tribute to his embodiment of the spirit, perfection and purity of the sport. His envelope is a collage of memorable events in his career and is framed by images of the pristine links and stunning coastline at Pebble Beach.

Visitors from around the world will rely on the U.S. Postal Service to ship their merchandise, especially with its Priority Mail Flat-Rate boxes. “If it fits, it ships” and both commemorative envelopes will make a nice fit to a memorable visit to Pebble Beach.

The California Gold Rush stamp, dedicated in 1999, that portrays the Big Sur coastline is depicted on both envelopes. The envelopes will be available for sale now through week of the U.S. Open that ends on June 20.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no direct support from taxpayers. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 28th in the 2009 Fortune 500.
