June 22, 2010

Release No.  10-053

FRESNO, CA – The Sacramento District of the United States Postal Service has concluded that in order to continue efficient service, operational stability and maintain community identity, in concert with planned and projected growth, the Fresno 93727 area was identified and approved for a ZIP Code split, creating a new Fresno ZIP Code 93737.

Effective July 1, 2010 approximately 1200 customers in Fresno, CA 93727 will have the last line of their mailing address changed. Only the affected customers on the East side of Temperance received a letter in May 2010, changing the ZIP Code to Fresno, CA 93737.

Delivery and customer services will continue from the Sunnyside Station located at 5435 E. Olive Avenue without disruption. No +4 codes were changed by this action.

Residents and businesses within the affected areas received written notification in May 2010 notifying them of their new ZIP Code. At that time, residents and businesses with newly assigned ZIP Codes were requested to notify all their correspondents as soon as possible. Postcards to notify correspondents were made available at the local Post Office for this purpose. To obtain the ZIP (plus 4) Code, customers can access our website at www.usps.com.

Customers will receive periodic reminders for up to a year from the effective date of the change to notify correspondents of their new ZIP Code. Mail service will not be affected and will continue to be delivered using either ZIP Code for one year.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no direct support from taxpayers. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 28th in the 2009 Fortune 500.
