Release No.  10-063

BERKELEY, CA — Ray L. Davis will follow a proud tradition dating to 1907 when Clarence S. Merrill became the first Berkeley postmaster. At 10 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010, Davis will take the official oath of office at the Berkeley Main Post Office located at 2000 Allston Way, Berkeley, CA 94704.

Davis, 53, began his U.S. Postal Service career as a clerk at the Palo Alto Post Office in 1977. He entered management in 1990 at the Pittsburg Post Office, followed by managerial positions in Rodeo, Emeryville and Berkeley. His Officer-in-Charge assignments included San Lorenzo, Moraga, Richmond and Alameda. His first Postmaster position was in Crockett in 2000, followed by a promotion to Postmaster of Alameda in 2003.

“Being a Postmaster in a diverse community such as Berkeley allows me to continue my personal goal of providing quality service,” Davis said. “I plan to establish a tradition of being the premier provider of service and value as defined by our customers.”

Davis is married to Priscilla. They have two children, Charlie and Leena.

Davis served in the Army from 1974 to 1977 at Fort Ord, CA, and in the Air Force Reserves for 27 years from 1980 to 2007 at Travis AFB, CA, where he studied leadership at the Non-Commissioned Officer Academy. He studied Criminal Justice at Diablo Valley College. His community activities include involvement with Oakland Little League and volunteer work with Lend a Hand and the Mother Wright Foundation.

As Berkeley Postmaster, Davis oversees 258 employees who process and deliver mail to 64,241 addresses over 116 delivery routes. Berkeley Main Post Office also services 2,648 Post Office Boxes.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no direct support from taxpayers. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 28th in the 2009 Fortune 500.
