Release No.  SC10-013

ATASCADERO, CA — On July 31, 2010, the U.S. Postal Service named Dan Mulvaney as the new postmaster of Atascadero. Upon his appointment, Mulvaney said, “I plan to fully dedicate myself to Postal Customers, my employees and the City of Atascadero in all of their Postal needs.”

Mulvaney is responsible for over 12,000 deliveries in the City of Atascadero. With 38 employees he serves 18 carrier routes and 2,840 Post Office boxes. “My goal is to provide a safe working environment for all of my employees and make it a nice place to work,” Mulvaney said. He added that the Post Office belongs to the community and his goal is to provide exceptional customer service. “I always want to be approachable to my customers and my employees.”

Mulvaney joined the Postal Service as a part-time flexible letter carrier in 1985. He moved from carrying mail to management, first as a temporary supervisor and then worked his way up the ranks. Prior to his assignment to Atascadero, he was the manager of customer service at Los Osos Post Office. Along the way, Mulvaney said he has had many mentors, but singled out Mike Martino, manager of Post Office Operations for the Sierra Coastal District. “He always comes up with fresh ideas and motivates me to do my best,” Mulvaney said.

In his spare time, Mulvaney enjoys fishing, hunting, golfing, surfing and camping. He is an active member of the community and belongs to the Surf Rider Foundation, the Knights of Columbus and the Moose Lodge. He also volunteers to cook at the Moose Lodge in Pismo Beach.

Married to wife Susan, Mulvaney is a 13-year resident of Pismo Beach. He attended Chaffey College in Southern California where he studied business management.

The Atascadero Post Office was established in 1934 and Mulvaney is the ninth postmaster to serve the community.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no direct support from taxpayers. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 28th in the 2009 Fortune 500.
