September 21, 2010

STUDIO CITY, CA — The U.S. Postal Service and its Cowboys of the Silver Screen commemorative stamp set joins in the celebration as the Museum of the San Fernando Valley and the Cultural Affairs Committee of the Studio City Neighborhood Council salute the legendary studio on Saturday, Sept. 25, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at the former Republic Studios lot: CBS Studio Center, 4204 Radford Ave., Studio City CA 91604.

The event is free to the public with festivities including screenings of Republic films, serials and trailers, an industry speakers forum, live western and swing music, entertainment by gun spinners and rope twirlers, memorabilia displays and kids activity area. Republic stars scheduled to make appearances include Anne Jeffreys, Jane Withers, Marjorie Lord, Coleen Gray, Theodore Bikel, Hugh O’Brian, Ben Cooper, Ann Rutherford and Peggy Stewart.

The Postal Service will have the Cowboys of the Silver Screen stamps on sale, as well as a Republic Pictures 75th Anniversary cachet envelope and a special pictorial postmark commemorating the day. Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, both featured on the Cowboys of the Silver Screen set, launched their film careers at Republic Pictures.

Founded in 1935 by Herbert Yates, Republic Pictures was an independent film production-distribution corporation with studio facilities. It focused on westerns, movie serials and mystery and action B-films. The studio also launched the careers of John Wayne and Rex Allen, and rocketed serials like The Adventures of Captain Marvel into the public imagination.

The Cowboys of the Silver Screen stamp set features four legendary film stars from the silent era through the singing era: William S. Hart, Tom Mix, Gene Autry and Roy Rogers.

Stamp artist Robert Rodriguez of Monrovia, CA, based the Cowboys of the Silver Screen images on vintage film posters and other materials: the epic film Tumbleweeds (1925) for William S. Hart, Cupid’s Round Up (1918) for Tom Mix, Gold Mine in the Sky (1938) for Gene Autry, and a variety of vintage materials for Roy Rogers.

The Republic Pictures special pictorial postmark will be available free to collectors for 30 days by mail. Enclose items to be postmarked, with First-Class postage affixed, in a cover envelope and mail to:

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no direct support from taxpayers. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 28th in the 2009 Fortune 500.
