PETALUMA, CA ― The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) announced today that, in a continuing effort to improve productivity and increase efficiency, it will begin an Area Mail Processing (AMP) feasibility study at the North Bay Processing and Distribution Center (P&DC) located at 1150 N McDowell Blvd, Petaluma, CA 94999.
An AMP study involves a review of mail processing and transportation operations of a Postal Service facility. The purpose of this study is to see if some mail processing operations at the North Bay P&DC can be consolidated into the Oakland P&DC, located at 1657 7th Street, Oakland, CA 94615.
The Postal Service is confronting one of the most difficult challenges in its history. Since 2007 mail volume declined by more than 35 billion pieces. This year the USPS projected a net loss of over $7 billion.
The USPS has to realign its processing and delivery network to match its resources with its workload. There is an excess of equipment, staff and facilities to process a declining volume of mail. Consolidating some postal operations only makes logical business sense given the economic realities.
If the feasibility study supports the business case for changing some mail processing operations, a public meeting will be held to allow members of the community to ask questions and to provide feedback. All comments will be considered in any decision.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no direct support from taxpayers. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 28th in the 2009 Fortune 500.
