San Jose letter carrier makes final appointed rounds after 33 years

Joe Lozano’s new delivery route will include babysitting

October 28, 2010

SAN JOSE, CA — In the culturally diverse community of Hillview, Joseph Lozano has noted changes that the years bring to neighborhoods. He has had ample time to do so, because he has spent his entire U.S. Postal Service career at Hillview, all 33 years.

Lozano was sworn into the USPS as a part-time city letter carrier in August 1977 after being discharged honorably from the U.S. Air Force. That same year, he wrote to the Sacramento Post Office. “I’d like to be considered for reassignment,” he penned. “I would like to try something new.” However, something new would mean longevity at the Hillview Post Office, 2459 Alvin Avenue, Hillview CA 95121, on delivery route 4810.

Now Lozano is really ready for something new. After 33 years at Hillview, and 37 years of government service, he has decided to make his last appointed rounds on Friday, October 29. Lozano plans to spend his time with his family. “I’ll be babysitting my grandchild,” he added. “I will miss my co-workers and my customers.”

Hillview Station Manager Cathy Ott said, “Co-workers and customers alike will miss Joe Lozano. We are celebrating his service with a potluck and sending him off with many best wishes.” The potluck will be held on Friday, October 29, at 9:00 AM. Lozano will carry his delivery route one last time the day before.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no direct support from taxpayers. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 28th in the 2009 Fortune 500.
