San Jose Post Office Offers Free Shipping Seminar

Direct Mail Made Easy Helps Local Businesses

August 01, 2011

SAN JOSE, CA — Free is good, and small and home-based businesses struggling to find ways to grow and increase sales will be able to find out how good, and easy, it is. Business owners will learn how to save money on shipping costs, online service providers, and find out about our new delivery system –Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM) – on Thursday, August 4, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the San Jose Post Office, 1750 Meridian Ave., San Jose 95125.

Representatives from the Post Office will show customers how to take advantage of quick, easy and convenient features like Every Door Direct Mail, the newest mail delivery service that allows customers to send mail directly to a specific delivery route at a low cost, with no fee or mailing permit required.

Every Door Direct Mail uses mail-delivery route information, instead of names and exact addresses, to reach targeted groups in specific geographic areas. The mail can be addressed to “Postal Customer,” “Residential Customer,” or “PO Boxholder” and dropped off at a local Post Office. Every Door Direct Mail saves mail preparation time and money and is delivered by local, trusted Postal Service carriers.

Businesses use a simple online tool at https://smp.usps.gov to identify neighborhoods and number of households, prepare mailing documentation and calculate postage. With Every Door Direct Mail, no permits are needed, and there are no special fees. Attendees will get a demonstration of the online tool.

“Every Door Direct Mail is ideal for local establishments like restaurants, medical offices, hair salons, grocery stores, and ‘mom and pop’ stores," said San Jose Postmaster Sam Vasquez.  “There is nothing more direct than direct mail, and we’ve made it simple, less expensive, and effortless for small businesses to reach local customers within a specific delivery zone of their choosing."

Direct mail has advantages other advertising media can’t claim — it’s personal, tangible, portable (can be set aside to read later and share with others), manageable and measureable. According to the Direct Marketing Association, every $1 spent on direct mail generates $12.57 in sales.
