August 26, 2011

UKIAH, CA — The U.S. Postal Service named Cathryn Swarm as the new postmaster of Ukiah, CA. Swarm, who recently moved to Ukiah, said she is looking forward to providing great customer service to the community.

"I am proud to work for the United States Postal Service,” Swarm said. “I hope my pride is exemplified in my employees and this, in turn, will benefit our community and customers."

Swarm joined the Postal Service as a part-time letter carrier in San Anselmo, CA, in 1990. Since then, she has held many positions. Before coming to Ukiah she was postmaster in Belvedere-Tiburon.

She credits her first supervisor, Norman Colteaux, with being a positive influence on her career. “He encouraged me every step of the way,” Swarm said.

In her spare time, Swarm said she enjoys reading and spending time with her family. She has a daughter who teaches elementary school in Livermore, CA.

Swarm is responsible for 16,000 deliveries. With 50 employees she serves 34 carrier routes and 1,800 Post Office boxes. The Ukiah Post Office was established in 1858 and Swarm is the 24th postmaster to serve the Ukiah community.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no direct support from taxpayers. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 28th in the 2009 Fortune 500.
