REDWOOD CITY, CA — The U.S. Postal Service named Anna Karmelita as the new postmaster of Redwood City, CA. Karmelita said she is looking forward to providing great customer service to the community.

“My ties to the community and commitment to provide the most efficient service are very strong,” Karmelita said. “For the most part, since arriving in the United States in 1983, Redwood City has been my home.” She said as the Postal Service continues its evolution, “I will continue to remember and celebrate its roots as the first national network of communication by providing quick, convenient, secure and reliable service every day.”

Karmelita joined the Postal Service as a part-time carrier in Redwood City in 1988 and eventually became a supervisor of customer service. She has served as the acting postmaster of Redwood City on several occasions and was appointed to the position earlier this year. She credits former Redwood City Postmaster John Silberberg with guiding her career. “He has been my mentor since I became a supervisor,” Karmelita said.

In her spare time, Karmelita said she enjoys working with children, the outdoors and exploring Bay Area sites.

Karmelita is responsible for over 41,000 deliveries. With 165 employees she serves 86 carrier routes and 4,200 P.O. Boxes in four stations including the Redwood City Main Office, Redwood City Downtown, Woodside Plaza and Woodside Finance. She is the sixth postmaster to serve Redwood City.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses, and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations. With 32,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, usps.com, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $67 billion and delivers nearly 40 percent of the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 29th in the 2010 Fortune 500. Black Enterprise and Hispanic Business magazines ranked the Postal Service as a leader in workforce diversity. The Postal Service has been named the Most Trusted Government Agency six consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute.
