EL SEGUNDO, CA — The El Segundo Branch Post Office will hold a grand opening ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday, May 21, 2012, at 8:00 a.m. The Post Office moved two miles from 200 Main St. to a newly remodeled location at 2130 Mariposa Ave.

There will be no change in El Segundo Post Office Box customers’ address or ZIP Code, and the Post Office Box lobby will be accessible 24 hours a day. The public retail hours also remain the same — Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The reason behind this cost-reduction move was the alignment of USPS workforce and infrastructure with a 20 percent drop in total mail volume over the past three years brought about by the diversion to electronic communication and business transactions. USPS does not receive tax dollars for its operations or facilities, but covers costs through the revenue received from the sale of its products and services.

The Postal Service owns the building at 2130 Mariposa, but leased the space at 200 Main St. The facility on Mariposa houses letter carrier operations and did not previously offer public retail service.

“This move made good business sense,” said Los Angeles District manager Ed Ruiz. “We are able to reduce our costs while still providing excellent service to the community in a beautiful new location with plenty of customer parking.”

El Segundo Mayor Carl Jacobson and City Councilmembers Dave Atkinson and Marie Fellaurer are scheduled to join Ruiz for the ribbon cutting officially opening the new El Segundo Post Office location for business. Also scheduled to participate are representatives from Congresswoman Janice Hahn’s office and other El Segundo City officials
