LONG BEACH, CA — Due to the lack of comprehensive postal legislation from Congress and the continued drastic decline in mail volume — more than 20 percent since 2007 — the Postal Service is facing severe financial challenges and must continue to take action to cut costs and reduce the size of its networks.
The Long Beach Area Mail Processing study, which was announced on September 15, 2011 and approved on February 23, 2012, will be implemented this summer.
Destinating mail processing operations for 3-Digit ZIP Code 906 will relocate from the Long Beach Processing & Distribution Center (P&DC) to the Industry P&DC. Destinating mail processing operations for 3-Digit ZIP Codes 905, 907 and 908 will relocate from the Long Beach P&DC to the Los Angeles P&DC. The transfer of operations and equipment is targeted for July 1, 2013.
Effective with this move, all Post Offices, Stations and Branches in the 905, 907 and 908 ZIP Codes will administratively report to the Los Angeles Postal District and become part of that District’s First-Class Mail overnight service area. Postal operations in the 906 ZIP Code area will remain part of the Santa Ana Postal District.
While mail processing operations at the Long Beach P&DC will cease with this move, public retail service, P.O. Box delivery, mail collection and bulk business mail acceptance will remain at the location for the time being. No decision has been made as to the future use or possible sale of the facility.
The Postal Service does not receive tax dollars to fund its operations and facilities.
