PACIFIC GROVE, CA — On Friday, July 19, 2013, Omar Norzagaray will follow a proud tradition dating back to 1886 when John Norton served as the first Pacific Grove Postmaster. At a 10:00 a.m. ceremony, Norzagaray will raise his right hand to take the official oath of office as Postmaster at the Pacific Grove Post Office, 680 Lighthouse Ave, Pacific Grove 93950.

Norzagaray started his U.S. Postal Service career in April 2001 as a distribution clerk at the Pacific Grove Post Office. In 2004 he was promoted to supervisor of customer services at the Seaside Post Office, later serving as the acting postmaster there.

“For me, I always knew there was something more than the gang environment I was surrounded by in the east side of Salinas,” said Norzagaray. “The Postal Service provided me not so much a way out, but a way up, and it gave me the opportunity to seek and set my own goals. To become a postmaster is a dream come true. I would like to inspire other kids currently living in the same conditions I grew up in to seek their own path to success, and to never give up on a dream.”

Norzagaray, 36, has two children, Emmanuel, 16, and Isabella, 12. He resides in Seaside. Norzagaray enjoys cross-country skiing, Iaido (Japanese Sword) classes and travelling.

As Pacific Grove Postmaster, Norzagaray oversees 27 employees who process and deliver daily mail volume of more than 34,000 pieces to 8,682 delivery points (addresses), on 14 city routes and 1,549 Post Office boxes.
