SHAFTER, CA — The U.S. Postal Service will help celebrate the 100-year anniversary of Shafter, CA, by offering a commemorative postmark to mark the event.
The town of Shafter was created out of lands of the Kern County Land Company’s Shafter Ranch in 1913. The town was laid out and the Green Hotel was built to attract prospective buyers. The excellent soil of the area was conducive to the production of many crops and the company was careful to only sell to settlers, not investors. A farming community quickly took hold and today, around 20,000 people call Shafter home.
The community will celebrate its 100th birthday Oct. 17-20, 2013. On Oct. 19, the Postal Service will have a temporary station at Mannel Park in Shafter from noon until 3 p.m., and at the Shafter Depot Museum Postal exhibit from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. where it will cancel stamps with the commemorative postmark.
The postmark is free; however it can only be placed on a First-Class postage stamp. The postmark may also be obtained by enclosing stamped envelopes, inside a larger envelope, and sending them to the Shafter Post Office, 322 State Ave., Shafter CA 93263. The request by mail must include a self-addressed stamped envelope for return and must be received by Nov. 18, 2013.
