Background: |
Irvine Letter Carrier Roger Steeber is being called a hero by the Orange County Fire Authority and residents of the Meadows Mobile Home Park after he rescued a resident from her burning home. A 35-year veteran carrier, Steeber was delivering his route at about 1:30 p.m. on September 17, 2012, when he saw smoke billowing from a residence down the street. He immediately drove to the source of the smoke, where he saw flames engulfing a carport and lapping at the side of the attached home. Noting the vehicle inside the fiery carport, the letter carrier realized the resident was home. As Steeber dialed 911 and spoke with the emergency operator, he also began to pound on the front door to rouse the elderly, infirm woman that he knew lived inside. Waking from a nap, the dazed and unsteady senior made her way to the door, but once Steeber saw her, he did not wait, but opened the door himself and got her outside. When she asked for her walker, he even returned to the burning home to fetch it. Then he ushered her away from the smoke and across the street to neighbors. |
